Salernitana has formally requested that its Serie B relegation playoff second leg against Sampdoria be postponed. The request follows a widespread food poisoning incident that affected 21 players and staff members.
The Italian club’s traveling party fell ill after their 2-0 first-leg loss to Sampdoria on Sunday. Now, Salernitana faces the prospect of relegation to the third tier, a year after dropping out of Serie A. The club says many players are too sick to train ahead of friday’s scheduled match.
CEO Maurizio Milan expressed the club’s dismay. “We are truly shocked by what happened and by the series of events that risk jeopardizing salernitana’s smooth and peaceful approach to the final and crucial minutes of the season,” Milan said. “Many players and staff, at the moment, are not even able to show up at the sports center to resume training.”
The club has contacted Serie B officials, who have shown openness to considering the postponement request. Salernitana has also called for an investigation into the cause of the food poisoning outbreak.
Salernitana’s participation in the relegation playoff came about after Brescia received a four-point deduction for financial irregularities. This initially relegated Salernitana, but Sampdoria then replaced Frosinone in the tie.
What’s next
Serie B officials will evaluate Salernitana’s request, and the league is expected to announce a decision soon regarding the status of Friday’s match. The investigation into the food poisoning incident is ongoing.
