Salli Richardson-Whitfield, known for her composed demeanor – she jokingly claims she didn’t even cry during childbirth – found herself moved to tears while accepting the “Woman of the Year” award from the black Women Film Network on August 26, 2023. The intimate dinner took place at Casa Locé, a Black-owned winery, further emphasizing the event’s commitment to supporting Black entrepreneurship.
Richardson-Whitfield’s career spans decades, encompassing acting, directing, and producing. She has directed episodes of critically acclaimed series like “Euphoria” (2019-present), “I May Destroy You” (2020), and “The Gilded Age” (2022-present), and produced films like “Savage Christmas” (2016). Her work consistently pushes boundaries and provides opportunities for diverse storytelling.
“It’s no secret that this industry is not easy. It tests your patience, your faith, and sometimes, honestly, your sense of self, and how we have to play a bunch of gymnastics to get out what we want to happen.But we keep showing up,” Richardson-Whitfield stated during her acceptance speech. “We keep finding ways to push through to open doors and continue to open and open.”
The Black Women Film Network and its Mission

Bell, is a non-profit institution dedicated to showcasing the work of Black women filmmakers and providing them with resources and support.
