Updated June 05, 2025
Cristina Costantini’s documentary, SALLY, which explores the life of astronaut Sally Ride, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Costantini, dressed in silver, described the premiere as a dream come true and called Ride her childhood hero.
The film, part of the festival’s Premieres section, won the 2025 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, which recognizes films focusing on science and technology. SALLY delves into Ride’s time at NASA in the 1970s and 80s, highlighting the media’s focus on her gender. The documentary also addresses Ride’s hidden sexuality, as Tam O’Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years, was not publicly known until after Ride’s death in 2012.

O’Shaughnessy spoke at the Q&A session after the screening, expressing her desire for a truthful portrayal of Ride’s life. She emphasized Ride’s role as a national hero and inspiration to generations. The film includes interviews with O’Shaughnessy and recreations of critically important moments in their relationship, creating a record of their love story.
An engineer who worked with Ride at Johnson Space Center expressed her gratitude for the film, recalling Ride’s advice to “always challenge the status quo.” An 11-year-old girl also thanked the filmmakers, stating that the film inspires young girls to pursue their dreams.
“I wanted to make this film for anyone who’s ever had to hide part of who they are to get where they want to be. And I think, sadly, in 2025, this experience is going to be more real then ever,” costantini said.
