The 2002 remix of ”Kaanta laga” stirred controversy with its bold sensuality, becoming a defining moment in early 2000s pop culture. Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, the directors behind the music video, revealed the challenges and inspirations that shaped the iconic track.
According to Rao and Sapru, actor Salman Khan once cautioned them against creating such suggestive songs, saying, “Stop doing such sexy songs, it’s not good. You have nice,pure minds.”
A Remix That Disturbed the Moral Fibre
Shortly after the release of “Kaanta Laga,” the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) summoned Radhika and Vinay. “We got a call from the censor board saying, ‘You have disturbed the moral fibre of the nation,'” they recalled.
Ironically, Salman Khan himself inspired the Kaanta Laga song. Vinay shared, “One day, we went to Salman Khan’s house. He was working out while listening to a Jhankaar Beats remix of a Kishore Kumar song.That sparked the idea for a new kind of music video.” This led to a departure from their previous work with Falguni Pathak,Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas,paving the way for remixes like “Kaliyon Ka Chaman” and “Chadti Jawani,” characterized by sensual styling and edgy narratives.
The Scandal Behind the Style
Radhika explained that the video’s rebellious vibe stemmed from personal experiences. “I went to a girls’ school.One of my friends refused to get a stamp on her hand at a club-she asked for it on her neck instead. That scene made it into the video. The porn magazine? I was once caught reading one in school-so we used that too.” Vinay added that finding an adult magazine for women with male models required a city-wide search.
They clarified that Shefali Jariwala’s thong was simply a fashion choice. Vinay said, “We didn’t realise we were disturbing the ‘moral fibre’ of the country,” referencing the CBFC’s criticism.

Shefali Jariwala, the face of the Kaanta Laga remix, later appeared on bigg Boss 13, hosted by Salman khan. Despite the initial controversy, the Kaanta Laga song cemented Shefali’s status as an icon. “There can be only one Kaanta Laga girl in the whole world,and that is me,” she said in an interview before her death. “I love it. I want to be known as the Kaanta Laga girl till the day I die.”
