Cult Ice Cream Chain Salt & Straw to Open First Texas Locations in Dallas and Fort Worth
A major name in the artisan ice cream world is expanding to Texas. Salt & Straw, a cult-favorite chain originating in Portland, Oregon, will debut its first scoop shops in Dallas and Fort Worth this spring.
The company announced that the two locations will be situated in popular neighborhoods: 2323 N. Henderson Ave. #107 in Dallas, within the same center as Gemma, and 1305 W. Magnolia Ave. In Fort Worth, taking over the former Great Harvest Bread Co. Space.
Founded in 2011 by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek, Salt & Straw began as a pushcart operation and has since grown to 57 locations, with a significant presence in California and expansion across the East Coast, including locations at Disneyland and in both Disney Springs and the Downtown Disney District.
Salt & Straw has garnered a reputation for its innovative and often unexpected flavor combinations. Head ice cream maker Tyler Malek oversees a constantly rotating selection of monthly specials. Recent examples of their creative offerings include a Thanksgiving Series featuring Parker House Rolls with Salted Buttercream, Turkey Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce (a salt-and-pepper ice cream with bread pudding, turkey sausage, and cranberry jam), Pumpkin Pie Tiramisu, and Cranberry Orange Sorbet.
The brand is also known for its collaborations, most recently partnering with Taco Bell in 2024 to create “Tacolate,” a cinnamon ancho chili ice cream encased in a waffle-cone taco shell, dipped in chocolate, and topped with toasted brown rice, served with Mango Jalapeño Sauce and Wildberry Cinnamon Sauce.
Kim Malek explained the decision to expand into the Dallas-Fort Worth area, stating, “We’ve spent meaningful time in Texas and have been inspired by the depth and momentum of its food and creative communities. Dallas and Fort Worth, in particular, stood out as places where craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and hospitality intersect in a really genuine way, making them natural homes for Salt &. Straw’s first shops in the state.”
The arrival of Salt & Straw adds to a growing trend of artisan ice cream chains entering the DFW market, joining Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, and Handel’s Ice Cream, as well as emerging local concepts like Melt in Fort Worth.
Both the Dallas and Fort Worth locations will feature Salt & Straw’s signature chef-driven classics, including Double Fold Vanilla and Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. The latter is made with house-made cookie dough utilizing the same malt used in amber ale brewing, incorporating two types of salt and a thick malted fudge.
Beyond the ice cream itself, Salt & Straw aims to create community gathering spaces. The shops will serve as platforms for hyper-local collaborations that celebrate the character of each neighborhood and encourage guests to sample as many flavors as they desire.
