Burns’ extraordinary score ranks among the lowest ever recorded at a U.S. Open held at Oakmont. He gained significant ground with his precise iron play and confident putting, accumulating 3.08 strokes on approach and 2.95 strokes putting.
Beginning his round on the back nine, Burns quickly found his rhythm with birdies on the 11th and 13th holes. He continued his strong play,adding birdies on the 17th and 18th,finishing the initial nine holes with momentum.
