Sam Heughan, famed for his role in “Outlander,” is set to star as the lead in “Macbeth” with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). This marks his first stage appearance in 12 years, a return he eagerly anticipates.
Heughan, who recently wrapped up filming the final season of “Outlander,” expressed his excitement about returning to the stage. He likened the experience to a craving, stating it’s “the drug I’m looking for.” Heughan also suggested that the eighth season of “Outlander” will air next year, following the premiere of the prequel series, “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” on Aug. 8.
Directed by Daniel Raggett, “Macbeth” will run from Oct. 9 to Dec. 6 at the RSC’s The Other Place studio in Stratford-upon-Avon. Lia Williams, known for her roles in “the Crown” and ”The Day of the Jackal,” will play Lady Macbeth.
Heughan trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and built his early career in theater. He recalls being an extra in a “Macbeth” production at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh during his youth. Heughan described “macbeth” as a “super-exciting” play with “incredible writing.”
Heughan also mentioned seeing Adrian Noble’s RSC production with Derek Jacobi and dreaming of one day performing the role himself.In 2008, he played Malcolm in a production of “Macbeth.”
