Sam Kerr Retains Captaincy Despite Harassment Allegation

SYDNEY (AP) — Sam Kerr, the 31-year-old Chelsea forward and captain of the Australian women’s national soccer team, will remain in her leadership role despite recent legal issues, the Australian Football Association announced Monday.
The association stated that no further disciplinary action would be taken against Kerr. The decision acknowledges Kerr’s acceptance of responsibility regarding the incident and her recognition of its wide-ranging impact.
Details of the Allegation
Kerr appeared in court Jan. 30, 2024, following an incident in London. She faced accusations of racially aggravated harassment for allegedly referring to a London police officer as “stupid and white.” However, she was found not guilty last month.
Following a meeting with the Australian Football Association’s board, Kerr issued a statement saying, “I am vrey sorry for the situation of the incident.”
The Australian Football Association added that they gained “an important point of view that the public could not know” after learning the specific details of the case.
Injury and Return
Kerr is currently sidelined due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture sustained during training in January 2024, keeping her out of official games since the end of 2023.She is undergoing rehabilitation with Chelsea in London and began personal training in January. She has recently rejoined the national team training camp as she prepares to return to play.

Kerr was appointed captain of the australian national team in 2019. She made her national debut at age 15 and has since become a leading striker for Australia.”I am proud of all the roles I have played as a member of the national team and as a captain,” Kerr stated.
