Richmond ruckman Samson Ryan faces a potential suspension following an off-the-ball strike on Port Adelaide’s Jordon Sweet during a match on April 4, 2026. The incident occurred during a game in which the Tigers suffered a 42-point loss to the Power at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The defeat leaves Richmond with a 0-4 start to the 2026 season, marking the club’s worst beginning to a campaign in 16 years.
The strike on Sweet took place far from the main action, with reports placing the incident between 80 and 100 meters away from play. The act has drawn immediate scrutiny from the Match Review Officer, particularly as Carlton’s Will Hayward was offered a one-match ban for a similar off-the-ball gut punch on George Wardlaw.
Coach condemns undisciplined act
Richmond coach Adem Yze expressed frustration over the lapse in discipline, noting that Ryan had apologized for the action after the match. Yze described the strike as a silly thing to do
and stated that such undisciplined acts crushes your spirit
when a team is already struggling with injuries and young players.
Yze emphasized that while execution errors are acceptable, the nature of this incident is harder to defend. The coach noted that the team had conceded several 50-meter penalties during the match, highlighting a broader issue with discipline within the squad.
Ruck division under pressure
A potential ban for Ryan would further strain a heavily depleted Richmond ruck division. Ryan is currently the club’s only recognized ruckman available for selection, having returned to the lineup after a foot injury and only half a game in the VFL.
The Tigers are already without skipper Toby Nankervis, who remains sidelined with a torn hamstring. While Category B rookie and former NBL player Ollie Hayes-Brown is on the list, he remains untried at this level.
The depth crisis was evident in a previous match against Fremantle, where Richmond was forced to utilize a makeshift ruck combination consisting of rugby convert Mykelti Lefau and rangy defender Campbell Gray.
Despite the disciplinary issue, Ryan’s performance in the ruck against Port Adelaide was competitive; he finished the game only four hitouts behind Jordon Sweet.
Looking ahead to Gather Round
The club is awaiting the arrival of Keiren Briggs from Greater Western Sydney, who is expected to join the team for Gather Round. Briggs’ arrival provides some relief for a roster that has struggled to find stability in the stoppage structure during the first four rounds of the season.
The loss to Port Adelaide and the looming suspension of Ryan leave the Tigers facing significant selection challenges as they attempt to break their winless start to the year.
