Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Ultra 2 to Get Five Years of Software Updates

Samsung is extending software support for the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 to five years of OS updates and five years of security patches, according to reports from SamMobile and Android Headlines. This commitment, announced during the July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event, increases the OS update window by one year compared to the previous four-year standard.

The update lifecycle means these devices will receive new versions of Wear OS through 2031. If Google continues to release one major version of the operating system per year, the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 are projected to reach Wear OS 12.

While the total duration of support is defined, Samsung has not provided specific dates for when individual updates will cease. The current commitment places Samsung’s Wear OS devices ahead of Google’s Pixel Watch models in terms of guaranteed software longevity.

Availability and Launch Dates

The Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 became available for pre-order on July 22. Both models will officially launch on August 7. Consumers can purchase the devices through Samsung, Amazon, and major cellular carriers.

The move to a five-year support cycle addresses a historical weakness in the Wear OS ecosystem, where software longevity often lagged behind the hardware’s physical lifespan.
