South Korean technology giants Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are intensifying their artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, marking a significant escalation in the nation’s domestic technology competition. This development comes as South Korea advances its sovereign AI strategy, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign AI systems while strengthening national technological capabilities.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has launched an ambitious sovereign AI initiative, pledging ₩530 billion (approximately $390 million) to five local companies developing large-scale foundational models. This government-backed effort underscores Seoul’s determination to cut dependence on foreign AI technologies, enhance national security, and maintain tighter control over data in the evolving AI landscape.

The selected organizations include LG AI Research, SK Telecom, Naver Cloud, NC AI, and the startup Upstage. Each consortium brings distinct advantages to South Korea’s AI race, with the government implementing a rigorous six-month review process to evaluate progress, discontinue funding for underperformers, and continue supporting frontrunners until only two remain to lead the country’s sovereign AI drive.

LG AI Research is advancing its Exaone series, with Exaone 4.0 representing a hybrid reasoning AI model that integrates broad language processing capabilities with the advanced reasoning features first introduced in the Exaone Deep model. This approach reflects LG’s strategy of combining general AI proficiency with specialized reasoning functions to compete effectively against global counterparts.

Samsung Electronics is pursuing its own AI trajectory through the expansion of its self-developed “Gauss” large language model ecosystem. The company has introduced a no-code AI agent builder and “Sirius,” a multimodal internal knowledge retrieval tool designed to structure tables and images for seamless access. Samsung’s newly unveiled image generation model—which integrates reference images to enhance precision—has demonstrated significant internal adoption, experiencing a 153% monthly usage surge that highlights its practical business value within the organization.

This coordinated push by South Korean corporations aligns with broader national objectives to establish a near self-sufficient AI industry. By leveraging the country’s dominance in memory chip production alongside indigenous AI development, South Korea seeks to position its technology as a credible alternative to prevailing systems from the United States and China. Industry analysts note that this approach distinguishes South Korea’s strategy within the growing trend of sovereign AI initiatives worldwide.
