Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia took another step towards a cashless society today with the launch of Samsung Pay, integrated with the national payment system “Mada.” The service, accessible through the Samsung wallet app, allows users to make secure and convenient payments using their smartphones, websites, or digital wallets.
This move aligns with the Central Bank of Saudi Arabia (Sama)’s strategy to expand the use of financial technology and enhance financial inclusion. “Samsung Pay provides users with an improved and secure payment experience,” Sama stated in a press release. “It enables users to add and manage MADA cards and digital credit cards with ease and security.”
The launch comes at a time of meaningful growth in electronic payments in Saudi Arabia. In 2023,electronic payments in the retail sector accounted for 70% of all individual transactions,a notable increase from 62% in 2022.
Sama is actively working to develop the payment infrastructure, aiming to achieve a society less reliant on cash. “We are providing advanced digital payment solutions in line with technological requirements and our national payment infrastructure,” the bank stated.
