Novel food, introduced in the European Union (EU), Canada, and Oceania, is a term that refers to a new concept of food. It refers to materials that were not previously used as food raw materials, but have begun to be used as food raw materials after being recognized for their safety. Samyang Corporation is the first company in the world to obtain Noble Food approval for allulose in Australia and New Zealand.
Allulose is a rare sugar found in nature and is an alternative sweetener that is about 70% sweeter than sugar and has zero calories. It has a sweet taste similar to fructose and has the advantage of producing a flavor similar to sugar through a caramelization reaction when heated.
With this approval, allulose is recognized locally as a food ingredient and can be used more freely in the manufacture of products with reduced sugar and no additives, unlike high sweeteners or sugar alcohols such as aspartame, sucralose, and erythritol, which are classified as food additives.
Samyang Corporation began preparations for FSANZ Noble Food approval in November 2021 and recently received approval after about three years of effort. As the first company to receive FSANZ Noble Food approval for allulose, Samyang Company will be able to exclusively supply allulose for the time being in accordance with local regulations. Accordingly, we plan to supply allulose from Nexweet, a B2B allulose brand, with an emphasis on finding local customers.
Lee Sang-hoon, head of Samyang Corporation’s Food Business Unit, said, “We are expanding the sales channel for allulose, focusing on North America and Japan, and with this approval, we will be able to expand our business area to Australia and New Zealand. We are conducting active promotional activities targeting new local customers and distributors to market the market. “We will take the lead,” he said. “With the recent completion of the Ulsan Specialty Factory, we will accelerate our entry into overseas markets as we have stable production capacity to respond to global demand.”
