SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo Central High School gymnastics teams are preparing for the Texas State Championships this weekend at the Odessa Permian gymnasium, aiming to build on recent success as both the girls and boys squads seek to advance their respective streaks, and standings.
The Lady Cats will be pursuing an eighth consecutive state championship under longtime head coach Tony Walker, a mark that would extend one of the most dominant runs in Texas high school gymnastics. The team’s state meet appearance follows a strong regional performance where they secured qualification with a score of 232.55 points, the highest among the 12 teams advancing to state.
On the boys’ side, the Central Bobcats enter the state meet seeded fourth but are focused on improving their position. The team features five seniors — Nic Atchison, Carson Freeman, Brady Stewart, Cadyn Stuart and Adam Williams — who will be competing in their final high school state meet. Last year, the boys placed sixth at state, and they are aiming to build on regional momentum where they finished second behind Odessa Permian with a score of 319.8 points.
Compulsory routines are scheduled for Friday, with optionals set for Saturday. The state meet will serve as the final competition for four Lady Cats seniors: Allison Garnett, Steely Young, Addison McDuffie and Ava Bedard. For the boys, this weekend marks the conclusion of the high school careers of the five senior Bobcats.
Central’s girls have already won seven straight state titles and are targeting a 15th overall championship in program history. While their immediate focus remains on the regional meet — where they have won 24 consecutive titles and are aiming for a 25th — the team is simultaneously preparing for the state challenge later in April.
Both teams qualified for the state meet after performances at the regional meet in Odessa, where the girls won the team title and the boys finished as runners-up. The girls’ regional victory came with a 232.55-point total, while the boys scored 319.8 points to claim second place behind Odessa Permian.
The Texas State Championships will be held April 24–25 at the Odessa Permian gymnasium, as confirmed by multiple local reports covering the teams’ preparations. Central’s gymnastics programs continue to be a focal point of West Texas high school sports, with the Lady Cats maintaining one of the longest active streaks in state gymnastics and the boys working to reestablish themselves among the state’s elite.
