Independent cargo truck drivers in San Antonio face mounting financial pressure as consecutive fuel price increases clash with freight rates that have remained essentially frozen since 2021, biobiochile.cl reported. The Agrupación de Camioneros Independientes de San Antonio warns that transport operators across the coastal commune in Chile’s Valparaíso region could halt their work in the coming days if ongoing talks with cargo generators and the government fail to produce a tariff agreement.
Stagnant Freight Rates and Rising Fuel Costs
Transport operators report that they collect nearly identical fees for hauling shipping containers today as they did years ago, while spending a significantly higher share of those earnings on diesel, vehicle maintenance, and daily operations. Association president Manuel Araya stated that cargo generators in San Antonio recently offered a rate adjustment of just 1,000 pesos per trip, an increase the organization rejected as entirely inadequate against surging operating expenses. To bridge the gap, the independent group demands that trip values be tied directly to variations in the Consumer Price Index or actual transport costs.
Route 78 Toll Plazas and Safety Concerns
Beyond freight tariffs and diesel costs, elmostrador.cl reported that the drivers’ three-point petition includes stopping the installation of new toll gantry structures on the southern access of Route 78. The union also demands urgent regularization of road safety conditions along critical highway stretches and the swift reactivation of an effective fuel price stabilization mechanism. Epicentrochile.com noted that fuel accounts for roughly 40 percent of total freight expenses, making price fluctuations an immediate threat to the viability of local transport businesses.

Government Meetings and Scheduled Transport Talks
Following an initial meeting with the Provincial Presidential Delegation of San Antonio, provincial delegate Soledad Loyola confirmed that authorities collected the union’s concerns and established a working table. Loyola also noted that a new highway access project remains in its environmental evaluation stage while officials gather feedback regarding toll gantry placements. Additional negotiations involving transport sector representatives and government entities are scheduled, with a potential meeting dependent on ongoing coordination with Undersecretary of Economy Karlfranz Koehler.
