San Diego Airport ‌Expands Parking, Adds Electric Vehicle Role

Updated June 13, 2025

San Diego International Airport (SAN) has increased its parking capacity with the opening ⁣of the second stage ⁤of the Terminal 1 Parking Plaza. The expansion adds approximately 2,400 parking spaces, bringing the total to 5,200. The plaza serves both the existing ⁢Terminal 1 and the New T1, slated to open in September.

The expanded Terminal 1 parking Plaza aims to meet the high demand for on-site parking at SAN. The facility features colour-coded sections,⁢ glass-backed⁤ elevators, and open‍ stairwells to aid travelers in locating their vehicles and ensuring safety. A free tyre-inflation station is available near the Level 1 exit, and luggage carts are provided ⁢on all levels.

The airport is also ⁢emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable transportation. More than 1,000 parking ‌spots‍ are reserved for carpool, electric, and hybrid vehicles.⁣ the plaza ‍includes 185⁣ spaces equipped with EV charging ports. A parking ‍guidance system helps customers quickly locate available spaces, reducing vehicle emissions.

Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the San Diego County ‍Regional ⁤airport Authority, said the first stage of the Terminal 1 Parking Plaza, opened in August 2024, more than doubled the number of parking spaces previously available. She added that the ‌opening of stage 2 allows the airport ‌to better provide parking for its customers, bringing⁣ the total to nearly 8,500 close-in parking spaces at ⁢Terminals 1 and 2.

Drivers can access ⁢the Terminal 1 parking Plaza by following directional signs along North Harbor Drive. Ticket kiosks with ‌intercom‌ systems are located at the entry and exit lanes, connecting drivers with the ‍airport’s parking management office.

“We have a notable demand for onsite‍ parking at SAN and the opening of stage 2 allows us to‍ better provide ⁤that‍ for our ⁣customers,” Becker said.
‍ ⁢

Vehicles ⁤entering and exiting the parking plaza within⁣ 10 minutes ⁢will not incur parking ‍charges.

What’s next

With the New T1 opening ‌in September, travelers can expect further improvements to airport services and facilities, including streamlined access to parking and enhanced transportation options.
