A man died on Tuesday following a standoff with San Diego Police Department officers after barricading himself inside a downtown apartment where he allegedly threatened his mother with a knife and set a fire, according to local authorities. The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. at an apartment complex near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street in San Diego, California.

Standoff and Evacuation Downtown

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting an armed domestic disturbance where a man attempted to harm his mother, according to the San Diego Police Department. The mother managed to escape the apartment and suffered minor injuries before being transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Upon arrival, police found the suspect barricaded inside the residence while blocking the door with furniture. According to San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Juan Márquez, the suspect began hurling objects out of the window, including a television set. One of the thrown items struck an officer in the face, though that officer did not sustain injuries, Márquez stated. As the confrontation escalated, the suspect ignited a fire inside the apartment, prompting the evacuation of dozens of residents from the multi-story building. Resident Abraham Rodríguez told reporters that building alarms sounded unexpectedly, prompting neighbors to flee into hallways and down stairwells as thick smoke filled the area. Francisco Barraza, another neighbor, reported seeing multiple law enforcement officers gathered in the hallway shouting commands for the suspect to emerge before reinforcements arrived.

Forced Entry and Fatal Shooting

Witnesses reported hearing several loud strikes on the apartment door followed by shattered glass as tactical officers breached the residence after seeing smoke billow from a window. Once inside, multiple officers opened fire during the ensuing confrontation, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Paramedics were called to the scene immediately following the shooting to administer life-saving measures. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has taken over the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Authorities noted that many displaced residents could not immediately return to their homes following the blaze, with the American Red Cross responding to the scene to assist affected tenants.
