San Diego Supercomputer Center Awarded Grant ⁣to Boost AI Research with‍ Cloud Technology

San Diego, ⁤CA – The San Diego ⁣supercomputer center (SDSC)⁤ at UC San Diego has been awarded‍ a prestigious Early-concept Grants for Exploratory⁢ Research (EAGER) award from the ‍National Science Foundation⁢ (NSF). This grant‍ will enable SDSC to provide crucial ‍IT support to research groups utilizing the powerful NVIDIA ⁢DGX Cloud platform, accelerating advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

“Our focus is on creating dedicated systems for each research group receiving NAIRR Pilot awards,” explained Mahidhar Tatineni, Principal Investigator and User Services Director for⁤ SDSC’s high-performance computing (HPC) systems. ⁤“Unlike shared⁢ systems, these dedicated environments will provide researchers with uninterrupted access for complex modeling tasks that can take weeks or even months to complete.”

Tatineni emphasized the importance of customization: “Some AI⁣ tools require specific configurations not possible ⁣in a shared environment. NVIDIA⁤ DGX Cloud allows us to collaborate with NAIRR‍ Pilot researchers to build tailored environments for their unique needs.”

This innovative approach combines the flexibility⁤ of cloud servers with the power of physical servers at supercomputing centers like⁤ SDSC.Researchers will benefit‍ from ⁢the best of both⁣ worlds, unlocking new possibilities for scientific finding.

“Our EAGER project will provide⁢ researchers with ‍guidelines, training, and tools ⁣to effectively leverage cloud platforms like NVIDIA DGX Cloud,” Tatineni said. “This will streamline their work, optimize performance, and ultimately accelerate research breakthroughs.”

NVIDIA DGX Cloud is a cutting-edge, ⁤fully managed AI platform designed for generative AI growth. it offers researchers access to ⁤the latest NVIDIA accelerated computing architecture, providing dedicated capacity for the entire AI lifecycle, from building and customizing foundation models to serverless inference.

“These features make DGX Cloud‍ ideal for ⁤NAIRR Pilot projects requiring substantial AI resources for focused research campaigns,” ‍Tatineni added.SDSC has been a key player in ⁤the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) initiative as it’s inception. Former SDSC⁢ Director and UC San Diego Distinguished Professor of Astrophysics Michael Norman was a member ⁤of the NAIRR Task force, which developed a‍ blueprint ‍for a ‍national AI strategy. SDSC continues⁣ to⁣ contribute substantially to NAIRR ⁢through the development ⁤of the NAIRR Pilot portal, providing computational resources ⁣from the Expanse and Voyager supercomputers, and leading the National research Platform⁣ (NRP), which offers valuable classroom resources.

The EAGER grant will be instrumental in empowering researchers to maximize the impact of their NAIRR⁢ Pilot awards ⁤on the NVIDIA DGX Cloud platform.this project is funded⁢ by the NSF (award no. 2438294) and ⁢represents a significant ‍step ⁢forward⁤ in advancing AI research and innovation in the United⁢ States.
