San Isidro, argentina – A new WhatsApp-based alert system is empowering residents of San Isidro to take a proactive role in their community’s safety. “Ojos en Alerta” (Eyes on Alert), launched by Mayor ramón Lanús, has seen remarkable success since its inception, leading to teh apprehension of 25 suspects and the recovery of a stolen vehicle.”We know that safety is the main concern of our residents, and it’s the cornerstone of our administration,” said mayor Lanús. “We promised to address this issue, and we are doing so. ‘ojos en Alerta’ provides a simple and effective tool that complements our existing security channels. It’s been a paradigm shift, a cultural change that has made a real difference. san Isidro residents are now active participants, playing a vital role in creating a safer city for everyone.”
The system allows residents to report suspicious activity or emergencies directly to the municipality via WhatsApp. This direct dialog has proven invaluable, enabling authorities to respond swiftly to incidents. Of the alerts received, 62% were preventative, while the remaining 38% involved crimes caught in progress.Text messages were the most common form of interaction (48%), followed by photos and videos (30%).
A dedicated team of operators at the city’s Command and Control Center (COM) receives these alerts and uses a network of surveillance cameras to monitor the situation. They then dispatch the appropriate response, whether it’s a police patrol, an ambulance, or a civil defense unit.
Since June, over 6,000 residents have been trained to use “Ojos en Alerta” through free workshops held at municipal buildings, community centers, businesses, and private homes. The program aims to reach 20,000 residents by 2025.
