A San Jose police officer was shot and critically wounded Tuesday during an armed robbery investigation that ended with the suspect dead at the scene, according to the San Jose Police Department. The confrontation unfolded in a neighborhood south of downtown near Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street, sparking a massive law enforcement response.

Armed Robbery Suspect Tracked to Lick Avenue Home

The incident began at approximately 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, when police initially responded to a call in the area, according to statements from San Jose Police Department spokesperson Stacie Shih. Officers later spotted the suspect driving an SUV and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Shih stated that the driver brandished a firearm at officers before fleeing the scene. The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle near Lick Street and Goodyear Avenue and entered a nearby residence occupied by a family with at least one juvenile, according to KTVU reporting. Officers tracking the armed individual converged on the home. When police attempted to apprehend the suspect inside the residence, the armed robbery suspect opened fire on two officers, striking a male officer at least one time, according to police accounts. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene, according to the San Jose Police Department. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased suspect.

Hospitalization and Massive Emergency Response

Following the shooting, the wounded officer was rushed to Valley Medical Center for emergency treatment, according to local reports. Police initially listed the officer in critical condition. By late Tuesday night, during a midnight news conference, SJPD officials announced that the injured officer had stabilized, according to KTVU. The active operation drew a heavy police presence to the surrounding neighborhood. Law enforcement units, including San Jose police officers and Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies with weapons drawn, saturated nearby intersections such as Almaden Avenue and Floyd Street. Aerial footage from SkyFOX captured the scale of the police activity in the residential sector south of downtown. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan visited the wounded officer at Valley Medical Center late Tuesday evening, according to mayoral office statements. Authorities stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community as the investigation continues.
