Table of Contents
Get ready to look up! The Huesca astronomical group is once again inviting the public to witness one of nature’s most stunning displays – the Perseid meteor shower, often called the “Tears of San Lorenzo.” This year’s viewing opportunities are scheduled for Sunday,August 10th,and Tuesday,August 12th,coinciding with the festivities honoring the patron saint of the Altoaragonese capital.
Where to Observe the Perseids in Huesca
To make this celestial event accessible to everyone, three dedicated observation points will be set up across the province:
Monzón: Kick off the viewing on Sunday at 11:00 PM at the Hermitage of Alegría.
Huesca: On Tuesday, august 12th – the peak of the Perseid activity – head to the rear of the Ramón y Cajal building within the Walqa Technology Park.
Sariñena: Also on Tuesday, August 12th, you can observe from the Sariñena airplane hangar.
Understanding the Challenge: A Luminous Moon
This year’s viewing conditions present a unique challenge. The Perseids occur just a few days after the full moon, meaning its brightness will somewhat diminish the visibility of the fainter meteors. Don’t let this discourage you, though! The Perseids are known for their brilliance, and even with the moonlight, you’re likely to catch some stunning sights.
What to Expect at the Viewing Sessions
Each session will begin with a short, informative talk explaining the wonders of the summer night sky and delving into the science behind the Perseid meteor shower. Informed astronomers will be on hand to answer your questions and guide your observations.
Several telescopes will be available, not only for viewing the moon but also for exploring other fascinating celestial objects. This is a fantastic possibility to learn more about our universe and appreciate its beauty.
Preparing for a Night Under the Stars
To ensure a cozy and enjoyable experience, the association recommends bringing the following:
Picnic: There won’t be any nearby bars or restaurants open, so pack your favorite snacks and drinks.
Warm Clothing: Even in August, temperatures can drop at night, so layers are essential.
blanket or mat: A comfortable place to sit or lie down will allow you to fully enjoy the show.
don’t miss this chance to witness the magic of the Perseids! It’s a truly unforgettable experience.
