‘The Sandman’ Series Ending After Season Two: Here’s Why
Updated July 1, 2025
Netflix’s adaptation of Neil gaiman’s acclaimed graphic novel series, the Sandman, will conclude with its second season. The initial season premiered in August 2022, and a second season was later ordered.
The 12 episodes of the second season are being released in three parts during July. The first six episodes dropped Thursday, with five more on july 24, and the finale on July 31.
The series, overseen by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg, stars Tom Sturridge as Dream/Morpheus, the titular Sandman. The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt.
Netflix says season two picks up shortly after the first season’s conclusion. Dream has been focused on rebuilding his kingdom. As he rebuilds his palace, he wants to leave the past behind and look to the future. But the past has other plans.
Speculation arose that the show’s end was linked to sexual assault allegations against Gaiman. Five women accused Gaiman of sexual assault in July 2024, alleging ”rough and degrading” encounters that thay claimed were not always consensual. Gaiman denied the allegations and stepped down from Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Good Omens.
Further details emerged in January, with four more women detailing their experiences. Gaiman again denied the accusations, stating that “some of the horrible stories now being told simply never happened.”
Though, Goyer said the decision to end The Sandman was made two years ago and is unrelated to the allegations.
Goyer told Variety that concerns about Dream’s limited presence in some story arcs influenced the decision.”Are we really going to sort of deviate and do six episodes that Dream’s not in at all, except for the very end?” he said.
He added that the show burned thru the story faster than anticipated, despite the original comic book run consisting of 75 issues. “The individual issues, a lot of them, when they were first being published, are only 17 pages,” Goyer said.
What’s next
Fans of The Sandman will have to accept that the second season will be the last.
