Sandwiches and Dementia Risk: What the Research Says
Daily consumption of high-fat cheese might potentially be linked to a reduced risk of dementia, according to new research from Lund University in Sweden. The surprising findings emerged from a study tracking the dietary habits of over 27,000 people for an average of 25 years, alongside their rates of dementia development.
Researchers found that individuals who regularly consumed around five slices of high-fat cheese or 20 grams of cream each day were less likely to develop dementia compared to others.
“This was perhaps not what we expected,” said Emily Sonestedt, a researcher in nutritional epidemiology at Lund University, in an interview with SVT.
Sonestedt cautioned that further research is needed to definitively confirm whether high-fat cheese actively prevents dementia. Though, she emphasized the potential for a protective effect. The study did not explore how cheese might offer this benefit, leaving that question for future investigation.
