Welsh Fire Owner Eyes T20 Switch for the Hundred Cricket Tournament
Sanjay Govil, an IT entrepreneur and owner of Washington Freedom in Major League cricket (MLC), believes The Hundred could benefit from a format change. Govil, who recently acquired a 50% stake in Welsh Fire, suggests the 100-ball format should eventually transition to T20 cricket.
Govil secured his stake in Welsh Fire after discussions with Glamorgan, valuing the team at £84.6 million. Despite initial assumptions that Welsh Fire would be the least valuable franchise, Govil was drawn to the “one team, one country” concept.
While Govil acknowledges the presence of one-day cricket,T20,and Test cricket,he questions the long-term viability of an additional format like the 100-ball game. He sees potential benefits in aligning The Hundred with the established T20 format, especially considering the existing T20 tournament among the counties.
Govil’s investment in Welsh Fire is described as a passion project, emphasizing that passion drives his ventures. He envisions integrating players between his two franchises, Welsh Fire and Washington Freedom, taking advantage of the close proximity of the MLC and The Hundred in the cricket calendar.Smith is already slated to play for Welsh Fire this summer.

Discussing the future of cricket, Govil suggests a potential shift towards a club-centric model, similar to European football. He envisions Test cricket being condensed into specific blocks within the year, allowing ample time for franchise leagues like the IPL, MLC, and The Hundred.
“I absolutely see it the same way. the Hundred should at some point follow the T20 format because you already have one-day cricket, you have T20,you have Test cricket, right? And just having one more variation, which is off from any other strategy … from a longer-term perspective it would just be better as a T20. But that is something for the future. And [the counties] already have a T20 tournament.”
What’s next
The formalization of Govil’s role as a major player in English cricket awaits the resolution of contracts with the England and Wales Cricket Board, expected soon. The future structure of TV rights for The hundred remains a topic of discussion, with Govil advocating for separate contracts to allow the market to determine the true value of each format.
