Equestrian Events at 2028 Olympics to return to Santa anita Park
Equestrian competitions for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are slated to take place at Santa Anita Park, revisiting the site that hosted the same events during the 1984 Olympics, the international Equestrian Federation (FEI) announced. The decision brings the equestrian events closer to the host city. However, the progress of a temporary cross-country course presents a significant challenge, potentially requiring relocation of the eventing competition.
Santa Anita Park, located in Arcadia near Los Angeles, has been confirmed as the venue for the equestrian events of the LA28 Olympics. “Santa Anita Park will be a stunning place for the Olympic Equestrian events,” said FEI President Ingmar de Vos in a press release. de Vos had previously indicated that Temecula, the site initially chosen by the LA28 organizing commitee, was no longer a viable option due to logistical and sustainability concerns. Temecula, situated approximately 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles, could have exposed competitors to more extreme climatic conditions.
The Olympic show jumping, eventing, and dressage competitions are scheduled to be held at Santa Anita, the historic Los Angeles racetrack that previously hosted the equestrian events during the 1984 Games. “the FEI has very good memories of Santa Anita. This site should offer a breathtaking scene for all Olympic equestrian competitions,” said de Vos. “The proximity of the city of Los Angeles will undoubtedly attract many spectators to Santa Anita. We are eager to continue our cooperation with LA28 to offer spectacular equestrian events at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.”
“On behalf of the International Olympic Committee, I would like to thank the FEI for its active participation in all discussions concerning the choice of site,” said Kit McConnell, IOC sports director.”We have established a solid partnership with the organizing committee and the city of Los Angeles, which benefits from the total support of the local equestrian community.”
Bill Moroney, CEO of US Equestrian, stated, “we have the utmost confidence in the Organizing Committee of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, and we anticipate exceptional quality equestrian events taking place at this legendary site of the 1984 Olympics. We are also very pleased that the IOC confirmed the athlete quotas in all disciplines for 2028,which remain unchanged compared to 2024.”

Cross-Country Course Presents a Challenge
Santa Anita boasts a veterinary clinic and has hosted major thoroughbred races, including the Breeders’ Cup. The park spans 320 acres and includes a platform that can accommodate 26,000 spectators. The interior of the racetrack can hold up to 50,000 people. There are sixty-one stables nearby that can house more than two thousand horses.
The FEI has not yet addressed the cross-country course for the eventing competition, which remains a significant logistical and financial challenge. The grass ring of the racetrack and the adjacent golf course could be a solution, but it would disrupt the golf course’s operations for an extended period. The LA28 golf events are scheduled to take place at the Riviera Country club, making this option geographically challenging. The botanical garden located on the other side of the racetrack is another possibility. If neither of these options is chosen, transporting horses to a more distant location would be necessary.
The location for the para-dressage competitions will be announced later, pending review and approval by the board of directors of the Paralympic International Committee.
