Over the past 18 months, the Santa Barbara Police Department recorded rising numbers of e-bike traffic collisions, offenses, and public complaints regarding unsafe operation, prompting increased education and enforcement efforts across the city.
Police Provide E-Bike Safety Training in Schools
To address community concerns, police officials stated that the department has been working with schools, community organizations, and local partners through education, prevention, and enforcement. Over the past year, the department provided e-bike safety training at nine local elementary and junior high schools, featuring presentations from the traffic unit and bicycle patrol team. The agency has also utilized press releases and social media to remind riders and families about California’s e-bike laws and safe riding practices. Partners in these initiatives include several Santa Barbara city departments, Move Santa Barbara County, the Santa Barbara Unified School District, and the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.
Citations, Impoundments, and Enforcement Operations
Alongside educational outreach, enforcement has increased. Since April 2025, authorities reported issuing nearly 600 administrative citations for unsafe e-bike operation. These citations feature an optional, education-based diversion program for juveniles coordinated with the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Officers also conducted three two-day safety enforcement details during the summer of 2026 covering all areas of Santa Barbara, resulting in more than 170 citations and 20 impounded illegal e-motorcycles during the combined six-day operation.
Ongoing Strategy and Community Encouragement
With the new school year underway, officers will continue working with local schools and youth organizations through ongoing presentations to reinforce safe riding habits. Enforcement remains a priority, and the agency will provide additional safety enforcement details on a regular basis. Police officials stated: The SBPD encourages parents to talk with their children about e-bike safety, including following traffic laws, riding responsibly, and staying aware of pedestrians, motorists, and other cyclists.
