Saoirse Ronan discussed her interest in exploring alcoholism through film. She found inspiration in Amy Liptrot’s autobiographical book, The Outrun, and decided to produce and act in the adaptation. Ronan described alcoholism as a “monster” that caused pain and confusion, impacting her life and loved ones.
Ronan noted the journey of understanding alcoholism is ongoing. She felt supported in her personal life when she decided to confront these themes in her work. Although making The Outrun offered some relief, she admitted it didn’t solve all her feelings of pain and loss.
Director Nora Fingscheidt allowed improvisation during filming. Ronan enjoyed this creative freedom, often improvising with friends in her personal life. However, she acknowledged that improvisation can sometimes lack focus.
Ronan highlighted her dual role as both actor and producer, emphasizing the importance of her production experience. She sought to use her years of knowledge to enhance her work. She encouraged other actors to explore directing or producing, citing her successful collaborations with Greta Gerwig and Bradley Cooper’s directorial ventures.
Ronan believes that such experiences enrich an actor’s craft and deepen understanding among fellow performers.
