Revelation and Disappearance
A limestone painting has gone missing from the tomb of khentika, located in the Saqqara necropolis near Cairo,Egypt. Mohamed Ismail, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, confirmed the disappearance. The mastaba tomb, dating back too the sixth dynasty of the Old Kingdom (approximately 2700-2200 BC), was originally discovered in the 1950s but had not been opened since 2019.

About the Painting and Khentika’s Tomb
Egyptian media outlets report the missing painting depicted the ancient Egyptian calendar, which divided the year into three seasons based on the Nile River’s cycle. These seasons were Akhet (the flooding season), proyat (the planting season), and Shomu (the harvest season). This calendar system was crucial to the agricultural practices and religious beliefs of ancient Egypt.
Mastaba tombs, like that of Khentika, are characterized by an underground burial chamber with rooms built above ground to house offerings for the deceased. these structures predate the more famous pyramids and represent an important stage in the advancement of ancient Egyptian funerary architecture. The Saqqara necropolis itself is a vast, ancient burial ground serving as the site for tombs and funery complexes for members of all social classes from many different periods in ancient Egyptian history.
The Saqqara Necropolis and Recent Discoveries
The Saqqara necropolis has been the site of numerous important archaeological discoveries in recent years. In 2020, archaeologists unearthed over 100 painted wooden coffins dating back over 2,500 years, a find hailed as one of the most important in decades. National Geographic provided extensive coverage of this discovery.
The ongoing excavations at Saqqara continue to reveal insights into the lives, beliefs, and artistic achievements of the ancient Egyptians. The loss of the painting from Khentika’s tomb underscores the challenges of protecting Egypt’s rich cultural heritage.
