Sara Duterte Threatens Violence Against Marcos Administration

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has shockingly stated that she would instruct a hitman to kill President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. if she herself is assassinated. This alarming declaration has prompted the Philippine Presidential Palace to vow serious action.

In a recent press conference, Sara Duterte revealed that she had communicated with a hitman, clearly stating, “If I am killed, kill BBM (Bongbong Marcos), First Lady Liza Araneta, and Speaker of the House Martin Romualdez. No jokes. No jokes.” She further emphasized, “I said, ‘Don’t stop until you kill them,’ and he agreed.”

Duterte’s comments came in response to a Twitter user’s request for her safety as she was in a hostile area at the Congress building. However, she did not mention any specific threats against herself.

The Philippine Presidential Communications Office responded swiftly, stating, “Acting on the vice president’s clear and uncompromising statements that she has hired a hitman to kill the president if a plot against her succeeds, the executive secretary has referred this active threat to the Presidential Security Command for immediate, appropriate action.” They added, “Any threat to the president’s life must always be taken seriously, especially a threat expressed openly with clear and definitive terms.”

The office of Sara Duterte has yet to respond formally to the presidential office’s comments. In the same briefing, she expressed her frustration with the current leadership, stating, “This country will go to hell because we are led by someone who does not know how to be president and is a liar.”

Sara Duterte is the daughter of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. She resigned from her cabinet position in June but still serves as vice president. Her remarks signal a breakdown of the political alliance that helped her and Marcos secure a significant victory in the 2022 elections.

Relations between Duterte and Marcos have grown tense, especially after budget cuts to the vice president’s office. Recent months have seen signs of a rivalry at the top of Philippine politics, marked by accusations of incompetence against Marcos and ominous remarks about his fate.

In the Philippines, vice presidents are elected separately from presidents and often have no official duties. Some engage in social development activities while others hold cabinet positions.

As the Philippines prepares for midterm elections in May 2025, this situation represents a critical test for Marcos’ popularity and his chance to consolidate power before his term ends in 2028.

Political violence has a history in the Philippines, including the assassination of Senator Benigno Aquino in 1983, who fiercely opposed the Marcos regime.
