Sarah McBride: First Transgender Woman Elected to U.S. Congress
Sarah McBride: Breaking Barriers in U.S. Politics
Sarah McBride is a pioneering figure in U.S. politics. At 34 years old, she is the first transgender woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She won the election on November 5 against Republican James Whalen III and will take office in January.
Before this election, McBride made history in other ways. She was the first transgender state senator in Delaware and the first transgender woman to speak at a national Democratic convention in 2016, supporting Hillary Clinton.
Following her election victory, McBride stated, “This night shows that Delaware is a fair state where voters judge candidates by their ideas, not their identities.” Despite ongoing opposition from some Republicans, including then-President Donald Trump, McBride focused her campaign on issues like reproductive rights, healthcare access, and paid sick leave.
Recent legislative proposals aim to restrict transgender individuals from using bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity. Some Republican lawmakers argue these measures protect women’s privacy. McBride responded by calling it a distraction and affirmed her commitment to focus on pressing issues rather than bathroom debates.
Throughout her campaign, McBride emphasized topics that resonate with her constituents. She advocated for laws to protect minors from abuse, combat discrimination, and expand healthcare services. McBride began her political career in 2006, helping the late Beau Biden’s campaign for attorney general in Delaware. She played a role in shaping President Biden’s support for LGBTQ rights.
McBride’s personal life has also been challenging. She publicly came out as a transgender woman at 21. Tragically, her husband, Andrew Cray, passed away from cancer just days after their wedding in 2014.
Before her election, she served as the press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ advocacy group in the U.S. McBride seeks to shift attention from her historic candidacy to the real problems facing the country, emphasizing her commitment to serve all Delawareans effectively.
With her election, McBride represents hope for many, showcasing the importance of identity and dedication in politics.
