Satakunta Welfare Area Reduces Support for Families, Children
Updated June 16, 2025
The satakunta welfare area has reduced the availability of support relationships, impacting families who rely on this assistance. In May,the area made approximately 200 positive decisions regarding support,a decrease from about 300 at the start of the previous year. Families have reported that the reduction in support activities has negatively affected children’s well-being and social skills.
Anna Kuromaa, Director of Responsibility, said the changes stem from harmonizing award criteria across the welfare area, not from cost-saving measures. She noted that previously, meaningful municipal differences existed in the criteria for special support. “Children and adolescents now have equal opportunities for support, provided they meet the criteria,” Kuromaa said.
Minna Saario, Department Manager of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, said Satakunta is not unique in needing to unify social and health service criteria. Other welfare areas with pre-existing municipal differences have undergone similar adjustments.
Kuromaa added that families are typically informed of decisions through discussions, often via phone calls, to explain the rationale. She emphasized that communicating decisions solely through text messages is unacceptable and would be considered an isolated error, not standard practice. Kuromaa believes the current decisions are more appropriately targeted, with customer service needs re-evaluated as circumstances change.
What’s next
The Satakunta welfare area will continue to monitor the impact of these changes and reassess individual needs as required, according to Kuromaa.
