Satellite imagery has revealed extensive destruction in southern Lebanon following an Israeli military operation that began after Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel on March 2, 2026, in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader at the start of the Israel-Iran conflict.
Since March 2, more than 1,400 buildings have been destroyed in southern Lebanon based on verified visual evidence from satellite images and videos obtained by BBC Verify, with the true scale likely much higher due to limited ground access and available imagery.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered on March 22 to “accelerate the destruction of Lebanese homes” near the Israeli border based on the “model in Gaza” as part of the campaign against Hezbollah, according to BBC Verify.
The systematic demolition of towns and villages in southern Lebanon may amount to a war crime, international law experts told BBC Verify, while the Israel Defense Forces stated it operates in accordance with the Law of Armed Conflict and does not allow destruction of property unless there is imperative military necessity.
Israeli officials have outlined plans for a long-term “security zone” inside the border, now referred to as a “forward defense line area,” with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating forces will expand positions 10 kilometers deep inside Lebanon.
Rights groups have warned that Israel’s military offensive mirrors tactics used in Gaza, including heavy strikes on critical infrastructure and healthcare facilities, targeting of journalists, and psychological warfare, according to CNN.
Amnesty International reported that visual evidence shows Israeli troops deliberately left a trail of destruction as they moved through southern Lebanon, affecting homes, mosques, cemeteries, roads, parks, and football pitches, with satellite imagery in one village showing the Star of David carved into the ground.
Even after the April 16 ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, ground operations have continued, with satellite imagery and videos showing demolitions ongoing, including excavators and armored vehicles clearly visible, as reported by CNN.
Context and Background
The current escalation follows Israel and the United States launching a war on Iran, which prompted Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attack into Israel on March 2, leading to the Israeli operation targeting what it said was Hezbollah infrastructure and launching a ground invasion of southern Lebanon.
On March 2, an IDF spokesperson first ordered Lebanese civilians living close to the border to leave, marking the beginning of the displacement and destruction that has since affected numerous villages in the region.
