Background and Context

The STC, aiming for an independent South Yemen, had previously‍ captured Mukalla and controlled meaningful portions of southern Yemen, challenging the authority of the internationally recognized government supported by ⁣Saudi Arabia. This move ⁤was perceived as a threat by Saudi Arabia. The United arab Emirates recently announced the withdrawal of its remaining troops from Yemen following a Saudi request.

The current conflict is rooted in the ‍2014 ousting‍ of the Saudi-backed government of President Abd Rabbu Mansour ‍Hadi by iran-backed Houthi rebels. The Houthis ⁢currently control ‍the capital, Sana’a, and much of northern Yemen.

Saudi Arabia knowingly⁤ misled the international community, thay announced a peaceful⁤ operation and had no intention of keeping it ⁣peaceful, al-Bid told Reuters.

Historical Context: South Yemen’s ⁢separatist Movement

The STC draws support from those who seek⁣ to revive the independent state of south yemen, which unified with North Yemen in ‍1990. A previous secession attempt in 1994 was⁤ suppressed by forces loyal to then-President Ali Abdullah Saleh. ⁢ Tensions escalated‍ in December ‍2025 when the STC seized control of areas in Hadhramout and Al Mahara provinces, advancing towards Saudi borders.
