RIYADH – Saudi Arabia has become the first nation to procure an armed variant of the C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft, signaling a significant expansion of its maritime surveillance and combat capabilities. A contract for four C-27J Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) was officially signed with Italy’s Leonardo, according to announcements on February 13, 2026.

The acquisition positions Saudi Arabia at the forefront of a new generation of multi-role maritime patrol aircraft. While the C-27J is widely used globally for logistical transport and specialized missions, this marks the operational debut of the armed MPA configuration. The aircraft will be equipped with Leonardo’s Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance (ATOS) mission system, alongside an integrated weapons package designed for both anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare.

Specifically, the Saudi MPAs will carry MARTE-ER anti-ship missiles and MU90 lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes. This armament will provide the Kingdom with enhanced capabilities for coastal monitoring, anti-submarine operations, surface warfare, and armed maritime reconnaissance. The integration of these weapons systems transforms the C-27J from a primarily transport-focused platform into a potent asset capable of both detecting and engaging maritime threats.

The C-27J Spartan is a twin-engine tactical transport known for its versatility and ability to operate from relatively short runways. The MPA variant builds on this foundation by incorporating advanced sensors, command-and-control systems, and precision-guided weaponry. Leonardo developed the armed patrol version in response to increasing demand for flexible maritime surveillance platforms capable of supporting distributed naval operations, particularly in littoral zones.

The ATOS mission system, central to the MPA’s capabilities, integrates radar, electro-optical sensors, communications equipment, and data processing tools into a unified architecture. This allows crews to detect, classify, and track maritime targets while simultaneously coordinating responses in real-time. The system’s integrated approach is designed to enhance situational awareness and improve the effectiveness of maritime patrol missions.

The MARTE-ER missile offers extended-range anti-ship capabilities, enabling engagement of surface vessels at significant distances. The MU90 torpedo, meanwhile, is designed to counter modern underwater threats, providing a critical capability for anti-submarine warfare. The combination of these weapons systems allows the C-27J MPA to address a broad spectrum of maritime security challenges.

This acquisition introduces a new dimension to Saudi Arabia’s maritime defense posture. Traditionally, maritime patrol and strike capabilities have been distinct functions, often requiring separate assets. The C-27J MPA bridges this gap, offering a single platform capable of both surveillance and direct engagement. This integration streamlines operations and enhances responsiveness in a region characterized by complex maritime security dynamics.

The deal not only establishes Saudi Arabia as the launch customer for the armed C-27J MPA but also signifies a broader trend towards the development of more versatile and adaptable maritime patrol aircraft. Leonardo has previously delivered standard C-27J aircraft to numerous countries for transport and special mission roles. However, the armed MPA variant represents a significant evolution of the platform, tailored to meet the evolving demands of modern naval warfare.

Maritime patrol aircraft are crucial for monitoring vital shipping lanes, detecting and tracking submarines, and enforcing maritime security zones. The ability to integrate offensive capabilities, as demonstrated by the C-27J MPA, enhances their effectiveness and allows them to play a more proactive role in safeguarding maritime interests. The aircraft’s ability to operate from shorter runways also expands its operational reach, enabling deployment to a wider range of locations.

The timing of this acquisition is noteworthy, occurring amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and Gulf regions. Saudi Arabia has been actively working to bolster its defense capabilities in response to regional instability and evolving security threats. The C-27J MPA represents a strategic investment in its ability to protect its maritime borders and safeguard its economic interests.
