Saudi Arabia Condemns Israel‘s Expansion in Syria, Citing Threat to regional Stability
Damascus – Saudi arabia has strongly condemned Israel’s seizure of buffer zones in Syria, calling it a move that undermines teh war-torn nation’s chances for recovery and stability. The move comes amid ongoing turmoil in Syria and Israel’s exploitation of the situation.
Following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime and the opposition’s control over significant portions of the country, Israeli forces have advanced further into Syrian territory from the occupied Golan Heights, encroaching on a zone that has served as a buffer for decades.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the decision, citing concerns that the shifting landscape in Syria after Assad’s fall could pose a security threat to Israel. He characterized the move as “temporary” pending a clearer understanding of the situation, arguing that the 1974 disengagement agreement between syria and Israel is no longer valid.
Reports indicate that occupying Israeli forces have pushed beyond the buffer zone, reaching within miles of the capital,Damascus.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the escalation, emphasizing that the actions of the occupying forces “represent a continued violation of international law and a commitment to sabotaging Syria’s opportunity to regain security, stability, and territorial integrity.”
Riyadh called on the international community to condemn Israel’s actions and urged respect for Syrian sovereignty, reaffirming that “the Golan is occupied Syrian territory.”
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced that Israeli forces recently conducted operations in Syria aimed at eliminating strategic threats. Speaking at a naval base in Haifa, Katz stated that “the Navy successfully destroyed a Syrian naval fleet last night.”
Katz issued a stern warning to rebel leaders in Syria, cautioning them against confronting Israel and asserting that those who follow the path of the ousted bashar al-Assad regime will meet the same fate.
“We will not allow militant entities to operate against Israel from across our border and endanger our citizens; we will take all necessary measures to eliminate this threat,” he declared.
The Defense Minister also indicated that Israeli forces are bolstering their presence in the buffer zone and areas under their control, justifying the move as necessary to protect Israeli settlers in the Golan Heights and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.
Hinting at a prolonged occupation of the buffer zone, Katz stated, “Together with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, I have ordered the IDF to establish a demilitarized zone free from weapons and terrorist threats in southern Syria. This zone will not feature a permanent Israeli presence, but aims to prevent the breeding and organization of terrorism – creating conditions similar to what existed in Lebanon and Gaza before October 7th.”
