Saudi Arabia Executes Six Iranians for Drug Smuggling,Sparking Diplomatic Row

Riyadh,Saudi Arabia – Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran have escalated after Saudi authorities announced the execution of six Iranian nationals convicted of smuggling hashish into the Kingdom. The executions, carried out in the eastern region, followed a lengthy legal process culminating in a royal decree.

The Saudi Home Ministry confirmed the executions, stating that the verdict was reached after a thorough inquiry and upheld by the Supreme Court. The ministry emphasized the government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety.

“The state government is keen to establish security, achieve justice and fight against drugs,” the ministry said in a statement.

However, the executions drew swift condemnation from Iran. Tehran summoned the Saudi ambassador to express “strong protest” against the move, labeling it “unacceptable” and a violation of international law. Iranian media reported that Tehran delivered a formal memorandum of protest to the Saudi ambassador, demanding a clear explanation for the executions and asserting that the action contradicted existing judicial cooperation agreements between the two countries.

This diplomatic clash comes just over a year after Saudi Arabia and Iran restored diplomatic relations in a landmark deal brokered by China, ending years of estrangement that fueled regional instability.

The executions have cast a shadow over the fragile rapprochement between the two regional powers, raising concerns about the future of their renewed diplomatic ties.

Rising Executions in Saudi Arabia

The executions of the iranian nationals are part of a larger trend in Saudi Arabia. According to data compiled by international organizations, 117 executions related to drug offenses were carried out in Saudi Arabia in 2024, a significant increase compared to previous years. This surge follows a three-year hiatus in the implementation of the death penalty for drug-related crimes.

The sharp rise in executions has drawn criticism from international human rights organizations, who have called on Saudi Arabia to halt the practice and review its judicial system.

A Fragile Peace Threatened?

The executions have sparked debate about the future of Saudi-Iranian relations.

“This is a serious setback for the progress made in recent months,” said Sarah, a political analyst specializing in the Middle East. “The executions could easily unravel the fragile peace that was painstakingly built between the two countries.”

David, a human rights advocate, expressed concern about the broader implications of the executions. “The sharp increase in executions, notably for drug offenses, is deeply troubling,” he said. “It raises serious questions about Saudi Arabia’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.”

As tensions rise, the international community watches closely, hoping that both sides can find a way to de-escalate the situation and preserve the hard-won diplomatic gains.
