Saudi Arabia Streamlines Final Exit Visa Process for Millions of Expats
In a significant development impacting expatriate communities across the Kingdom, the General Directorate of Passports of Saudi Arabia has announced a sweeping change to its final exit visa procedures, affecting an estimated 13 million foreign residents and their families. The new regulations allow for the inclusion of all family members and dependents on a single final exit visa application, a process that previously involved complex and time-consuming procedures.
According to reports, what once took weeks of navigating bureaucratic hurdles can now be completed in a matter of minutes through the Absher electronic platform.
Ahmed Al-Masri, an accountant based in Riyadh, expressed his surprise and relief: “I feared the complexities of arranging travel for my family of five, but now, with the click of a button, everyone will be included!” The official announcement states that the visa is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance, provided the resident’s identity card (Iqama) remains valid for at least 30 days.
The process is described as straightforward, akin to ordering food through mobile applications: logging into Absher, selecting the service, entering the required data, and clicking the issuance icon.
This decision aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s broader push towards the digital transformation of government services. Dr. Khaled Al-Ghamdi, a public administration expert, emphasizes that “this decision saves 80% of the time and effort compared to previous procedures.” Mohammed Al-Hindi, a project manager who has observed the evolution of services over his ten years of residency, describes the change as comparable to “the revolution in electronic banking – from long queues to complete convenience at home.”
The immediate results are already being felt. Sarah, a Filipina domestic worker, was able to finalize her departure arrangements for herself and her family within minutes, a stark contrast to the weeks it previously required. The service is also accessible to domestic workers through a dedicated section on the platform. Passport offices, once characterized by long lines, are now largely empty, allowing staff to focus on more critical tasks.
Experts predict that this new system will save an estimated 100,000 hours of work per month across the Kingdom.
This represents not merely an electronic service. it is described as a genuine revolution in simplifying government procedures. Experts anticipate that a similar system will be implemented for other services in the near future, further solidifying Saudi Arabia’s position as a digitally advanced destination for employment. Individuals wishing to take advantage of this streamlined service are encouraged to log onto the Absher platform or the Muqeem portal and ensure their identity cards are valid.
