About FairBreak
FairBreak is a private company established in 2013 with a mission to promote gender equality in sports. The organization previously hosted the FairBreak Global Invitational T20 in dubai (2022) and Hong Kong (2023).A planned 2023 edition in the USA was initially postponed to 2024 but ultimately did not take place.
The FairBreak Invitational received full sanctioning from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and comprised six teams. Notable players who participated included Chamari Athapaththu, Sophie Ecclestone, Laura Wolvaardt, and Marizanne Kapp.
Challenges and Indian player Participation
Despite the success of the FairBreak Invitational, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not grant No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to Indian players, preventing their participation. As of November 28, 2023, it remains uncertain whether Indian players will be eligible to compete in the new T20 tournament in Saudi Arabia.
Alignment with Saudi Vision 2030
the new T20 league is presented as being “in alignment with the ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030,” a strategic framework to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public service sectors. Key objectives of the tournament include developing women’s cricket talent through structured training programs, increasing public awareness of the sport, fostering international collaboration, and attracting players from a diverse range of nations.
Saudi Arabia’s Growing Cricket Presence
The Women’s World T20 Challenge is part of a broader push to elevate Saudi Arabia’s profile in the world of cricket. The country hosted the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in Jeddah in 2024 and is also planning to support a new, Grand Slam-style circuit of T20 tournaments. Furthermore, saudi Arabia is scheduled to host matches in future seasons of the ILT20 (International League T20).
