Saudi Arabia is at the forefront of urban health initiatives in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa region, boasting 16 cities accredited by the World health Association (WHO) as “Healthy cities.” This milestone, announced by minister of Health Fahd bin abdul Rahman Al-Jalajel on November 7, 2023, underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to prioritizing human health within urban progress and preventative care.
The achievement aligns with the goals of the Quality of Life program and the Health Sector Transformation program, both key components of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. These initiatives aim to improve the overall well-being of citizens and residents through strategic investments in health infrastructure and lifestyle promotion.
Empowering Citizens and Leveraging Technology
Al-Jalajel emphasized the health system’s focus on empowering individuals to actively participate in their own healthcare. This includes investing in health technologies and digitization to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the healthcare system, ultimately improving the quality of life and general health of the population.
Regional and Global Collaboration
The Kingdom’s Healthy Cities Program holds a prominent position internationally, serving as the first WHO Collaborating Center in the region and the fourth globally. This centre actively collaborates with government agencies to integrate health considerations into daily life through improved urban planning, increased community engagement, and resident empowerment. The goal is to create urban environments that actively promote both mental and physical health.
The WHO Healthy Cities Programme
The WHO Healthy Cities Programme, launched in 1986, aims to put health high on the social, economic, and political agenda of cities. It encourages cities to adopt a holistic approach to urban development, considering the interconnectedness of health, surroundings, and social well-being. Key areas of focus include:
- Healthy urban planning
- Safe and affordable housing
- Accessible transportation
- Clean air and water
- Community participation
- Health equity
Cities seeking accreditation undergo a rigorous assessment process to demonstrate their commitment to these principles.
