The search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of prominent US television journalist Savannah Guthrie, has entered its third week, with authorities continuing to investigate her disappearance from her home near Tucson, Arizona. The case, now classified as a kidnapping by the FBI, has drawn national attention and prompted a surge in public support, as well as increasing scrutiny of the investigation itself.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on January 31, after being dropped off by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, following dinner with her daughter, Savannah, and Cioni. The FBI believes she was taken from her home in the Catalina Foothills area in the early hours of February 1. A reward for information leading to her safe return or the arrest and conviction of those responsible has been doubled to $100,000.

Law enforcement officials have been pursuing multiple leads, including analyzing over 13,000 tips from the public. Doorbell camera footage released earlier this week depicts a suspect described as a male, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with an average build, wearing a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack. The FBI is focusing on tracing the origin of the backpack, attempting to determine how many were sold and when.

On Friday, February 13, authorities conducted raids in neighborhoods located a few miles from Nancy Guthrie’s residence. While the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the raids, no further details were released. The investigation has also involved the recovery of DNA from the property that does not belong to Nancy Guthrie, and the examination of several ransom notes sent to media outlets.

The case has garnered attention from high-profile figures, including former President Donald Trump, who stated on February 13 that “progress has been made,” while also commenting on the potential sophistication or lack thereof of the perpetrators. “Someone either knew what they were doing very well, or they were rank amateurs. Either way, it’s not a good situation,” he said.

Savannah Guthrie, anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, has made public appeals for her mother’s safe return, and recently posted a tribute to her mother on social media, expressing the family’s continued hope. Support for the Guthrie family has been visible in the Tucson community, with yellow ribbons adorning trees and a growing shrine of flowers outside Nancy Guthrie’s home. A banner reading “Bring Her Home” has been placed in front of a local news station.

The investigation has not been without its challenges. Reports have surfaced alleging that Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is hindering the FBI’s access to key evidence. Sheriff Nanos has refuted these claims, stating they are “not even close to the truth.”

The FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, released the surveillance footage of the suspect in an effort to solicit further information from the public. Authorities are meticulously examining evidence, including multiple gloves discovered during the investigation, utilizing forensic analysis to identify potential clues.

The prolonged absence of Nancy Guthrie has understandably heightened anxiety among her family and friends. Despite the lack of concrete developments, the Guthrie family continues to express hope for her safe return, a sentiment echoed by members of the Tucson community who have rallied in support.

The case remains active and ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working to piece together the events leading up to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance and identify those responsible. The FBI urges anyone with information to contact them at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov.
