HS2 Faces Challenges Amid Fraud Allegations and Cost Concerns
Updated June 18,2025
The HS2 high-speed rail project is under increased scrutiny as fraud allegations surface and costs continue to mount. Government officials are downplaying the possibility of renegotiating deals, while the final plan for the Euston terminus remains elusive.
Mark Wild, the new chief executive tasked with salvaging the project, admitted that initial cost and schedule estimates were overly optimistic. He is now considering reducing the speed of the high-speed line’s trains to achieve greater cost certainty.
Amid growing public outcry, politicians from various parties, including Nigel Farage, Greg Smith, and Lord Berkeley, have urged the government to scrap the project entirely. These calls underscore the deep dissatisfaction with the project’s management and financial implications.
Transport Secretary Alexander told the Commons that allegations of fraud in parts of the supply chain “need to be investigated rapidly and vigorously,” signaling a shift toward taking these claims seriously. He added that consequences will be severe if fraud is proven.
Wild said the organization will ”reset our relationship with government to establish alignment and enable successful delivery.”
