Saxophonist María Elena Ríos Warns of Possible Escape of Juan Antonio Vera Carrizal After Hospitalization
Oaxaca Saxophonist Fears Attempted Murder Suspect Could Escape Hospital Custody
Oaxaca, Mexico - María Elena Ríos Ortiz, a saxophonist and survivor of a brutal attempted femicide, has raised serious concerns about the security of her alleged attacker, former PRI deputy juan antonio Vera Carrizal. Ríos Ortiz claims Vera Carrizal, who has been imprisoned since April 2020, was transferred to Oaxaca’s private Reforma Hospital on December 2nd for medical treatment and has remained there for 17 days without returning to prison.
Ríos Ortiz, who was attacked in her Huajuapan de León home in September 2019, says she was not notified of Vera Carrizal’s transfer, despite being the victim in the case. She learned of his hospitalization through a third party and expressed alarm at the lack of security at the hospital, fearing he could escape.
“When I arrived at the hospital, there was no security whatsoever,” Ríos Ortiz stated.”Instead of securing the area, state police officers harassed me, filmed me, and threatened to call the National Guard to remove me.”
Ríos Ortiz alleges a web of corruption protecting Vera Carrizal, implicating Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara Cruz, State Supreme Court President Berenice Ramírez Jiménez, and State Attorney General Bernardo Rodríguez Alamilla. She has appealed to Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo for intervention, arguing that justice is unachievable in Oaxaca, particularly for cases like hers and that of missing activist Claudia Uruchurtu.
Following Ríos Ortiz’s public accusations, the Oaxaca state government issued a statement confirming Vera Carrizal’s hospitalization due to medical complications. they assured the public he would return to Tanivet prison upon his release.
However, tensions escalated further when a woman, reportedly the partner of one of Vera Carrizal’s lawyers, allegedly assaulted Ríos Ortiz’s sister, Silvia, at the hospital. Ríos Ortiz, who has a restraining order against Vera Carrizal, was also reportedly struck during the altercation. Police intervened to separate the parties. This incident has reignited fears about the safety of Ríos ortiz and the integrity of the justice system in Oaxaca.
