COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s technical college graduates can more easily get an online degree under a partnership with Western Governors University, as announced in a statewide transfer agreement signed on April 15, 2026.
The agreement between the South Carolina Technical College System and Western Governors University (WGU) allows graduates of the system’s 16 colleges to transfer academic credits more seamlessly to WGU’s accredited online programs. The partnership aims to expand access to bachelor’s degree opportunities, particularly for two-year college students from minority and other underrepresented populations.
Under the agreement, graduates and staff from across the SC Technical College System are eligible to apply for WGU’s Community College Partner Scholarships, valued up to $3,500. These scholarships are designed to support continued education and professional development through WGU’s flexible, competency-based learning model.
WGU offers more than 120 online bachelor’s, master’s, and professional certificate programs in fields including business, technology, healthcare, and K-12 education. Its tuition structure is priced at approximately $4,000 per six-month term, allowing students to complete as many courses as they choose within each term, which can accelerate degree completion and reduce overall costs compared to national averages.
Dr. Tim Hardee, president of the SC Technical College System, emphasized that the partnership expands opportunity for graduates and employees across South Carolina. “By creating a seamless transfer pathway to WGU, we are helping students continue their education in a flexible format that supports career advancement and long-term success,” he said in a statement released with the announcement.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to making higher education more accessible, affordable, and relevant for technical college students seeking to advance their academic and professional goals through online learning pathways.
