TRENTO. Cases of scabies, perhaps the Norwegian variant, are being reported at the Villa Belfonte care facility in Villazzano. This is indirectly confirmed by the local health authority, as treatments and therapies began yesterday, January 16th, for those infected or suspected of infection.
Elderly residents exhibiting symptoms are being isolated in their rooms, and carts with gloves and gowns are available for visiting family members in the hallways. Recent cases in Trentino, as previously reported, included five diagnosed at the Cles nursing home, where treatment and preventative measures were immediately implemented for those with symptoms and their contacts.
Scabies, a skin condition caused by the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, has seen a resurgence in recent years, including in developed countries like Trentino. Historically linked to poverty and poor hygiene, scabies is increasingly spreading in care facilities, schools, hospitals, and large families, where transmission is easily facilitated.
Previous cases were reported in recent months at the San Bartolomeo care facility in Trento, the Mezzocorona nursing home, and in Arco and the Giudicarie Valley. “In 2025, 281 cases were reported, compared to 240 last year,” explained Dr. Maria Grazia Zuccali, director of the APSS Prevention Department, to local news. “Of these 281 cases, 74 were reported by nursing homes, the others from schools or the general population.”
