ISTANBUL, Türkiye – Scandlines’ new zero direct emissions ferry has successfully completed its initial sea trials in teh Marmara Sea, Türkiye. The trials, known as Sea Acceptance Tests (SAT), followed a period of equipment dock testing of the ship’s auxiliary systems and a triumphant running test, according to Scandlines.
Rigorous Testing Underway
During the two-week test period, the Cemre shipyard, in collaboration with Scandlines and under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register, rigorously tested the ship’s systems under cargo conditions. The focus was on evaluating the performance of the batteries and electrical installations, and also the propulsion system.
“During the two weeks of tests at sea, the batteries and electrical installations of the ship were tested. The propulsion system could also be seen for the first time,” said Rasmus Nielsen, Vice President of Fleet and Scandlines Administration.
Back at the Equipment Dock for Further evaluation
The ferry has returned to the equipment dock, where Scandlines, the Cemre shipyard, Lloyd’s Register, and the Danish maritime authority are conducting comprehensive testing, verification, and documentation to ensure compliance with all applicable construction regulations and specifications. This process includes thorough examination of all ship equipment, identification and resolution of any challenges, and comprehensive crew training in the operation and maintenance of the vessel.
Crew Training and Preparation
The ferry’s crew has already received initial training at scandlines’ facility in Rødbyhavn and at the Cemre shipyard. The training included a thorough review of all safety procedures.
Anticipated Voyage to Rødbyhavn
Upon completion of the current phase, the ferry will be delivered to Scandlines and is scheduled to sail to Rødbyhavn with a portion of its future crew. Planned stops include Gibraltar and Brest, France.
“It will be a very vital day for us when we see our new ship sailing towards Rødbyhavn, and we are very excited to put it into service. With our first ferry completely free of emissions, we take a big step towards our goal of navigating without direct emissions on the Rødby-Puttgarden route for 2030,” said Michael Guldmann Petersen, director of operations at Scandlines.
Official Naming Ceremony in 2025
The ferry is slated to receive its official name during a commissioning ceremony at Fehmarnbelt in late 2025.
