Scarlett Johansson stars as New York police detective Julie Miller in Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s upcoming horror feature The Exorcist: Martyrs,
directed and written by Mike Flanagan, according to reporting from NaFilmu.cz. The film is scheduled for release in Czech cinemas on March 11, 2027.
The Plot and the New Threat
Thirteen years after successfully capturing the satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday, detective Julie Miller faces a terrifying return of the past, Novinky reported. According to Aktualne.cz, Miller’s name appears written in blood on the wall of a church crypt next to the body of a tortured altar boy. To decode the growing web of clues, she partners with former prison chaplain Father William, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who heard Father Sunday’s final confession before his execution, as detailed by Fandíme Filmu. NaFilmu.cz added that Julie was present at the killer’s execution and that Father Sunday’s crime scenes resembled the torture and death of Catholic saints. Fandíme Filmu noted that the new occult killer draws Julie into an investigation that reveals a connection among historical serial killers ranging from H. H. Holmes to Zodiac, pointing to an ancient evil that reaches beyond the world of the living and can endanger everyone she cares about.
Expanding the Horror Universe
The film does not serve as a direct continuation of any prior movie in the franchise, but instead takes place within the world of the original 1973 The Exorcist, which was based on William Peter Blatty's novel, NaFilmu.cz reported. Fandíme Filmu noted that the broader series spans three decades of sequels, prequels, and television adaptations inspired by William Friedkin's original work. Fandíme Filmu reported that William Friedkin helped fundamentally shape the horror genre in 1973 with his film about the demonic possession of a girl named Regan, which was followed by two sequels, two different prequels, the indirect sequel The Exorcist: Believer, and a loosely connected television series. NaFilmu.cz stated that Mike Flanagan described The Exorcist: Martyrs as the scariest and darkest film he has worked on, noting in an interview with Fangoria that he wanted to steer the franchise in a completely new direction. In an interview with Esquire, Flanagan emphasized that his goal was not just to offer another variation on the famous story, stating, We created something that is very different from what people might expect, and explaining that he wanted to portray a disturbing world where God is dead and safety does not exist. NaFilmu.cz also noted that Johansson entered the horror genre thirteen years after starring in Under the Skin, where she portrayed an alien procuring human meat for her planet.
Cast and Detective Thriller Style
Flanagan combines religious horror elements with a dark detective thriller style reminiscent of films like Se7en
and The Silence of the Lambs,
drawing inspiration from historical serial killers ranging from H. H. Holmes to Zodiac, according to NaFilmu.cz. Fandíme Filmu noted that inspiration also came from William Peter Blatty’s novel Legion,
which served as the basis for the third film in the series. The ensemble cast features Diane Lane as Miller’s mother, Jacobi Jupe as her twelve-year-old son, Sasha Calle as starting detective Gina Restrepo, Laurence Fishburne as Father Nichol, and John Leguizamo as the imprisoned serial killer Father Sunday, as outlined by Aktualne.cz and NaFilmu.cz.
