Sceirde Rocks Offshore Wind Farm Set to Transform Ireland’s West Coast
Construction of the Sceirde Rocks Offshore Wind Farm, Ireland’s first major offshore wind project on the west coast, is set to begin in 2026. Located 5 to 11.5 kilometers off the coast, with Carna in Galway as the nearest settlement, the project promises to power 350,000 homes, reduce carbon emissions by 550,000 tonnes annually, and inject up to €70 million into local community initiatives.
Developed by Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta, a joint venture between Australia’s Macquarie Group and Canada’s Ontario Teachers’ Pension Board, the wind farm will feature turbines with a maximum tip height of 325 meters (1,066 feet). The project has already cleared significant regulatory hurdles, including securing a 450-megawatt capacity award under Ireland’s Offshore Renewable Electricity Support Scheme in June 2023.
The wind farm’s energy will be transported via a 68.5-kilometer undersea cable, passing west of the Aran Islands and making landfall at Killard on the Clare coast. This location lies near the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg. At Killard, an underground transition joint bay (TJB) will connect the offshore cable to the onshore grid. The TJB, a 20-meter-long, 5-meter-wide concrete chamber, will be accompanied by a temporary construction compound during the build phase.
From Killard, the onshore grid connection will run underground for 19.3 kilometers to a new 220-kilovolt compensation compound at Ballymacrinan, Co. Clare. The project has already seen significant investment, with €31.7 million spent on development costs in 2023 and 2024. Despite accumulated losses of €35.93 million as of March 2023, the company remains committed to delivering a project that aligns with community needs and expectations.
Michael Cloherty, stakeholder manager for the Sceirde Rocks Windfarm, emphasized the extensive community engagement that has shaped the project. “This planning application marks the culmination of around three years of surveying, data analysis, and community engagement,” he said. “We’ve worked closely with the local community to design a project that delivers on their needs and expectations.”
If approved, the wind farm will operate for 38 years, with the first electricity generation expected by 2030. The planning application is now open for public submissions until 5:30 p.m. on March 24, offering third parties an opportunity to voice their opinions on the project.
