Scottie Scheffler and Austin eckroat carded matching 8-under 62s on Thursday to seize the first-round lead at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn. The par-70 TPC River Highlands, known for yielding low scores, lived up to its reputation as the final Signature Event of the season got underway.

Scheffler shot a 5-under 30 on the front nine and continued his momentum with a birdie, eagle, par, and birdie stretch.A bogey on the 17th, his only one of the day, stalled his bid for an even lower score. He missed the fairway, his approach rolled off the green, and he missed a 15-foot par putt.
“I got hot pretty early in the round…and then I really kept the momentum through basically hole 15 and then I had one mess-up ther on 17,” Scheffler said. “But overall it was a pretty good day.”
Despite his strong showing, Scheffler noted the challenging conditions, citing gusting winds.He said the wind made it difficult to execute shots, requiring constant adjustment.
Not all top players thrived. Ludvig Aberg, Adam Scott, and Robert MacIntyre, fresh off a U.S. Open runner-up, failed to break par. Xander Schauffele finished at 1-under.
Scheffler addressed the perception that TPC River Highlands might be too easy for a Signature Event, referencing his Wednesday comments. “I think a proper test is good shots being rewarded and bad shots being punished.I think this is one of the best golf courses for that,” Scheffler said.
