PHILADELPHIA — Max⁢ Scherzer, the Toronto Blue Jays’ prized right-hander, took a notable step in his recovery Friday, making a rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo. The three-time Cy Young Award winner, sidelined‍ with right thumb inflammation, pitched ⁤4 ⁤1/3 innings against the⁢ Columbus Clippers.

scherzer, 40, reached 94 mph on his fastball adn threw ​56 pitches in the outing. He‌ allowed two runs, striking out four and walking none. One blemish was a 425-foot home run surrendered too C.J.Kayfus, a top minor​ league prospect⁤ for Columbus.

The veteran signed⁣ a one-year,$15.5 million⁢ contract with⁢ Toronto in February. His regular season debut was cut short on March 29 against Baltimore due to lat soreness,⁣ leading to his ‍placement on the injured ⁢list with thumb inflammation.

Despite⁣ the long ball,the crowd gave ‌Scherzer ‌a warm ⁢ovation‍ as ⁢he exited the⁤ game. Blue Jays manager John Schneider emphasized that the primary goal ​was‍ Scherzer’s well-being.

⁤ “It’ll be the‌ most watched ⁣Triple-A ⁢game for a while,” Schneider saeid. “Or most uploaded Triple-A game.”

Scherzer, an eight-time​ All-Star, previously received two cortisone ‍injections to‍ address the thumb issue.He boasts World series rings from his time with Washington (2019) and Texas (2023). His first Cy ⁤Young came in 2013 with Detroit, followed ‍by consecutive National⁤ League awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017.

Schneider indicated that scherzer likely needs⁣ one more rehab start⁢ before⁢ rejoining⁤ the Blue Jays’ rotation.
