⁤ Paolo Cirino Pomicino, a former Italian Christian Democratic parliamentarian,
⁢ ‍ is struggling to obtain linezolid, a crucial antibiotic needed to treat a
new bout of pneumonia. He reports that⁣ pharmacies are unable⁣ to dispense
the medication even wiht a prescription, as it is classified as ⁣a
⁤ “hospital drug” requiring hospitalization for access. Pomicino describes
⁤ the situation as a matter ⁢of life and death.
⁣

‍ “I ‍am upset and worried.‍ Upset as it is indeed ‍increasingly tough to cure
⁤ themselves, even for a fee,” Pomicino stated from his home in ‍Rome,
⁣ adding, “Worried, why⁤ I have a lung in ⁢place and I don’t know how to ⁣do
⁢it.”

Recent Hospitalization and Current Condition

Pomicino was hospitalized for ⁣four months at a hospital in Turin due to
⁢ pneumonia. Following his discharge, he developed a feverish attack at
home in Rome. He is now unable to access the linezolid antibiotic needed
⁢ ⁤ to treat the⁢ recurrence.

⁣ “I was hospitalized for four months at⁤ the⁣ Turin ⁤hospital due to a
⁢ ⁢ ‍ pneumonia,” Pomicino told Adnkronos. “Now, I am⁣ in Rome, I have restored a
⁤ feverish attack at home. I can’t have this drug ⁢as the schizophrenic
⁣ legislation of this government‍ requires ⁢a recipe for a hospital doctor or
hospitalization. ⁢What should I do to have it?”
⁣

Linezolid: A Hospital Drug and Access⁤ Challenges

‍⁤ ⁤ ⁤ Linezolid is an oxazolidinone⁣ antibiotic used to treat serious infections,
including pneumonia,especially those caused by drug-resistant ⁣bacteria.
⁣ Its classification as a “hospital drug” in Italy presents a meaningful
barrier‍ to access for patients who do not require full hospitalization ‍but
still need the medication. This policy appears to be the core of
Pomicino’s complaint.

⁢ The requirement for⁤ a hospital doctor’s prescription or hospitalization
creates ⁣a logistical and potentially life-threatening situation for
patients like pomicino, who‍ are stable enough to ⁢be at home⁤ but require
ongoing antibiotic treatment.

Political Context‍ and Calls ⁤for Reform

Pomicino’s criticism‍ is directed at what he describes as ⁤”schizophrenic
‍ legislation” enacted‍ by the current⁢ Italian government. His case highlights
⁤potential flaws in the system for accessing essential medications and raises
questions about the balance between⁣ controlling⁣ antibiotic use and ensuring
patient access to necessary treatment.
